Longtime independent publisher has 16 titles
bearing the Mom’s Choice seal
TERRA ALTA, W.Va. – The Mom’s Choice Awards has given two more Silver designations to children’s titles published by Headline Books Inc., recently named the International Independent Publisher of the Year by the London Book Festival.
My Horse Samson by teenage horsewoman Ashley Ball received a Silver Mom’s Choice Award for non-fiction books for children ages 9-12.
Everyone Has Hope by Jason Lynch, illustrated by Cole Hale, received a Silver Mom’s Choice Award for children’s picture books.
In My Horse Samson, Ball writes about how her family rescued two neglected mares in Preston County, W.Va. One of those horses had a foal, which she named Samson and trained to win ribbons in jumping events at the State Fair and beyond. Full-color photographs from the Balls’ family albums illustrate the true story.
Recently, My Horse Samson won an honorable mention from the Los Angeles Book Festival. Earlier, The USA “Best Books 2011” Awards named My Horse Samson a Finalist in the Children’s Non-Fiction category.
For Everyone Has Hope, Lynch collaborated with Hospice Care Corp., a nonprofit organization, to craft a story to share with any child who has experienced the loss of someone close to them. Hospice Care Corp. is dedicated to the promotion of healthy coping skills for grieving children, and has sponsored Camp Nabe, a bereavement camp for children ages 7-17, since 1996. Everyone Has Hope is part of their on-going commitment to dispel grief stereotypes and the feelings of alienation that often accompany the significant loss in the life of a child. This unique book has been developed to spark healing conversations and bring comfort during the most difficult of times in a child’s life. Craft projects are included to complement the story and to provide further outlets for children to play act, mimic and create drama in their own comfort zone.
